As the research endeavors of the EPL are primarily interdisciplinary in nature, much of our work is conducted in cooperation with other departmental research facilities. These collaborations include work with the Exercise Immunology Laboratory, which examines the effects of exercise on immune function and susceptibility to disease. Additionally, the EPL works with the Neurocognitive Kinesiology Laboratory, which utilizes electroencephalography (EEG), startle blink reflex, facial electromyography (EMG), heart rate, and reaction time data in examining the relationship between physical activity and mental health with a particular emphasis on the aging brain. The EPL also collaborates with the Exercise Neuroscience Research Laboratory, which conducts research pertinent to expanding the scientific knowledge base that largely focuses upon social-cognitive determinants and mental health consequences of exercise and physical activity, with a particular interest in individuals with Multiple Sclerosis and adolescent populations. Further, the EPL has participated in research with the Motor Control research Laboratory which aims to understand the effect that aging has on sensorimotor control. Collaborations with the Bone and Body Composition Laboratory involve gathering anthropometric data from methods such as Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA), underwater weighing (UWW), and Dual X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA). The department also houses a clinical research exercise area (including aerobic and strength training machines) which is dedicated to funded clinical trials.
